The ironbark tree is a native species and has a very thick bark which it does not discard. This bark becomes an almost black armour which assists the tree in developing fire, drought, and termite resistant characteristics. The timber becomes hard and dense and early settlers used it for railway sleepers, bridges and minining shafts, with Indigenous Australians using the bark for shelter, canoes and other forms of 'protection'.
Yalgari, meaning ‘tree’, is an Indigenous Australian word from the traditional Malgana language of the Shark Bay region in Western Australia.
